Farewell to SMACC2

My brothers and sisters,

I thank God when I remember that we are all sharing in the Gospel, partners in the service of the Kingdom. I thank God for the way that we have been called together, not by common denominators like hobbies, or educational background, race, or even social economic status, but by the blood of Jesus, for the sole purpose of the demonstration of His immense glory.

I am thankful for the many ways that you have allowed me to glimpse this glory in our service of each other. I am eternally grateful for those who had gone out of their way to befriend me when I was a newcomer, to those who opened up their lives to me, to those who kept me accountable, who grabbed me by the shoulders and shook sense into me when I needed it. I am also thankful for those who have served as Godly role models for parenting and caring for children. You have been my family here in KL, and a source of immeasurable encouragement to me.

If I can be of any encouragement before I part from you, I would want to remind you of the hope that you have received, and continue to stand in, lest your faith be in vain; that Jesus, the Christ died for the sins of His people, and that you have been justified and are being sanctified. It has colossal implications for every sphere and facet of our lives. No area of our lives should go without the power of this news burning through it. As such, continue to go bravely into that dark and messy night of human relationships and be raw and real with each other. Keep breaking past categories. None of that paiseh business. Sharpen each other into Christlikeness, helping each other struggle with sin. Serve each other boldly, holding back nothing. Be the family that Christ has ordained you to be that the World may see and know that you are His disciples.

Soli Deo Gloria.

Late Night Discussions

I had the opportunity of having quite an insightful discussion with a good friend which revolved around the topic of gender roles in Creation.

His position was that having husbands to lead wives as part of their role as men was a "dick move" by God. He elaborated by saying that he understood why God might have said it then, but it shouldn't have to apply in modernity. After all, we eat shrimp, sit on seats where menstruating women have sat, and wear clothes with mixed fibres.

I explained at this point that the Mosaic Law given to Israel is no longer binding on us because it is fulfilled in Jesus. Jesus kept it all perfectly on our behalf, and so we trust him to do just that. Gender roles on the other hand, goes farther back than the Mosaic Law, I told him. It starts in the Garden of Eden, where you find the basic blueprints of Creation laid out.

"But you're quoting Old Testament as well!" He rebutted.

Well, to be fair, the thread of gender roles, explicitly in marriage is found in the New Testament as well. The thread continues unbroken. Paul talks about the roles of husband and wife in Ephesians 5, showing us that marriage and the roles played by husband and wife has a far larger purpose, that is to point forward to the reality of Christ and his Bride, the Church, which is yet to come. Which is why Jesus talks about there being no marriage in the resurrection (Matthew 22:23-33).

"Yeah, I get how God might have said it like that then, because the culture of that time was patriarchal, but now things have changed!" He retorted.

That caught my attention, because it came across as convoluted (it was 1am), and I love convoluted stuff. Untangling the statement to uncover the assumptions behind it is always fun.

"So which of the two are you saying," I posed a question back at him. "That reality is because God decrees it, or that reality is and God merely describes it?"

But question didn't hit home, so I tried again.

"So, I suppose we can agree that God is the Creator of reality."

"Yes..."

"And so, if he is the Creator, he gets to dictate the rules of reality, no? Like the solar system working in a certain fashion, with the planets revolving around the Sun and stuff."

"Yes..."

"Therefore, God being the Creator of reality, and humans being a subset of reality, God gets to dictate our gender roles function?"

"That's like saying you have a car, and the car is blue, therefore all cars must be blue"

"Far from it..."

"That still is a dick move for God to say men must lead the women. If the women are more capable, why shouldn't they take the lead? If God came to me and told me personally, I'd tell him to F*ck off, he can send me to hell."

The converstion ended there, because we had arrived at a book fair, and I got distracted.

But thinking back about last night's conversation, I realise that the problem isn't even actually gender roles. It's us wanting God to approach us on our own terms. As if we were there to help him hold up the foundations of the Earth while they were being laid.

It's kinda like meeting a person for the first time, and as he introduces himself as Mr Mbwewe, you insist,"No, your name is Ms Wong." As if you would know better.

Children of Wrath, Like Literally

Once, there was this pastor visiting this church I used to attend in the early days of my university life. During his sermon, he made this statement: 'Children are sinful too!' At that point, I assumed that everybody there understood and agreed with the pastor. After all, everyone was guilty of rejecting the kingship of a God who had created this world, whether adult or child, and are under judgement for said rebellion; and this rebellion shows itself in many ways, but most of the time, it is about wanting ourselves to be the centre of the universe, whether it is in relationships with God, with other people, or even with the natural world around us. It was later that week, while I was talking to a girl from the same congregation about the sermon, where she told me in a very hurt tone, that she "couldn't believe that children were sinful". At that time I didn't say anything. I had no idea what children were like.

Today, almost four years down the road, with roughly the same amount of working experience with children, I think if I ever get the chance to relive that conversation, I would tell the girl that she obviously had never had to look after children for more than a quarter of an hour. In my three years with children even as young as six months, I have witnessed jealousy, rage, selfishness, self-righteousness, and manipulation. Although undeniably, they do have a great capacity for kind deeds, and the gift of a short memory for grievances, one can hardly say that they are the innocent, chubby angels from above. After all, like they say, we just only get better at hiding it when we grow up.

As I recount my experiences with children over the past three years, I am reminded of this article I read somewhere. Probably on the Gospel Coalition. Regardless, it was about Gospel centred parenting, where children need the Gospel as much as the adults. After all, do we not have a high priest who once was the infant in a manger, and the child at the temple? As much as he identifies with adult struggles with sin, he also identifies with the struggles of children with sin. In realising this, my heart is once again burdened with how I can share the good news of Jesus with these children, and I despair at the shortness of my arm. For how then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? Though the harvest is plentiful, the workers are few and overworked.

So, if you are thinking about areas of ministry you would like to help out with, let me encourage you to have children's ministry be one of them. No, it is and has never been limited to women only. In fact, the young boys would benefit lots from having a male figure setting an example.

Adventure Time!

No, this post has nothing to do with Finn and Jake, besides the fact that their picture is gloriously posted below.

This post however, has more to do with my past weekend, amidst the heavy rain and glum. The adventure began on Saturday morning, where for my work training, I was sent, together with my colleague, to an indoor rock climbing centre in Wangsa Maju called Mad Monkeyz. It's a pretty small shop lot, but packed to the brim with walls you can climb on. After six hours there, I am now a certified Level One Sport Climber, and am allowed to belay for top-rope climbers.

The walls there are only about 4m high, but don't let it's short stature fool you into thinking that it is easy! Compensating for what they lack in height, they excel in challenge, both mentally and physically. There are many excruciating paths you can choose to traverse across the walls, and even ceilings! Definitely a fun place to visit if you're looking for both a mental and physical challenge.

Scaling walls is a hungry business, and so for dinner, I was at the Overseas Restaurant to celebrate the 50th birthday anniversary* of a dear family friend. 50 years and she doesn't look much different from when I first met her about 20 years ago. One thing I really admired was that at the dinner, her father made good use of the opportunity to share the gospel with the guests. Very, very brave of him!

At the dinner, I met up with the birthday girl's sister and brother, who are my old fishing 'kakis'. It goes without saying that somebody casually mentioned the word 'fish', and we ended up going for a all-night fishing expedition to this Natural Exotic Fish Fishing Pond in Rawang. For RM100, you can fish for three hours, or you could pay RM100 for two hours and try reel in a jackpot catch. They said that there were giant fish to be caught, and they were absolutely serious about it. Here's me with my 8kg catch - the biggest I have ever gotten. Ever. Amongst the four of us, we managed to reel in another three more giant Redtail Catfish (Hemibagrus wyckioides) by 5am. Unable to stay awake any longer, we left quite reluctantly. So there ended my adventure.

*I say birthday anniversary because you technically have only one birthday. No prizes for guessing when that was. The ones you celebrate every year, would then naturally be your birthday anniversaries.
**Farshid, if you're reading this, no worries. The fish were not killed, but allowed to recuperate, then were subsequently returned into the pond.

Surprise, surprise!

My Fishing Buddies
My landlord's daughter and her friend Pat found this little hidden pond in the fringes of Desa Park City. They made a trip there the day before, but didn't get much besides two juvenile toman.

Hoping to get in on the fun as well, I decided to join them today. We got to the lake at about close to 1100, and the weather was really sunny. I think I've got quite burnt. That pond is really quite something! You can actually see the fish leaping out of the water, and swimming around. There'll be the occasional terrapin breaking the surface too.

Catch of the Day!
This time, we brought earthworms for bait. The fish didn't quite seem to fancy the worms we brought, so I tried luring them in with some meal. Next thing I know, something's gently pulling my line taut. Seeing the slow movement of the line, I didn't think much of it, and reeled in anyway. Several tugs on the line, and I didn't seem to feel like anything was on the hook. Strangely enough, as the bait end came in closer, I could see the silhouette of a fish breaking the surface, and this fella popped out!

However, with closer inspection, I noticed that the line looked a little funny - it was all rusty brown. Then I realised it wasn't my line at all! Turns out somebody had hooked this fish, and thinking the line got stuck, cut the line. That or the fish broke the line. Either ways, the line trailing from that fish's mouth had got ensnared in my hook, allowing me to reel in the biggest fish I've ever caught.

After reeling in my catch, I was quite satisfied, so I didn't really try for any more. Instead, I took a stroll to the opposite side of the pond where we had seen plenty of piscine activity. Standing on the edge of the stone bridge, I could see plenty of fish, and proof that my fish wasn't the biggest in the pond! I'm definitely marking this spot down as potential fishing area. The only problem is the security guards... may have to pay them off. haha.

One Year...

I can't believe it's already been almost one year since I've set foot in HELP. It seemed like yesterday when I first stepped into Wisma HELP for my orientation and first lecture. It seemed like just hours since I first met Joyceralda Lim & Co (Joyce, Esme, Jeremy, etc.). lol. It seemed like I stepped into the Ministry House just moment ago. It seemed like I've only spent minutes hanging with KC and the Sunshine band (KC, KM, HR, Kevin, Koo, Daryll, etc.).
And now the year's drawing to a close. Where did all that time in between go?
Jamming sessions at the Ministry House, Chilly Pan Mee sessions, doing assignments and studying in McD's, more makan-ing at Ming Tian, dinner at the Ministry House, indoor picnics, birthday surprises and parties, emo sessions...lol, cramped car rides to Subang, CF camp, captain ball, movie outings in between lectures, assignment attempts at Daryll's place, COD, carolling practice...
Time sure flies when you're having fun. I feel really blessed to be in such good company. Thanks, guys, it has been a good year. (^_^) I'll see y'all when I come back from the hols!

Walks in the Sunset

This is a Chinese saying which says that the light of the setting sun is sublime, and that time is short.

As I was setting the stew to simmer, Joyce was staring out the kitchen gate. As I joined her by the gate, she mentioned how the weather was perfect for a walk.

Hearing that, I thought it would have been a good idea to actually go for one. The whole bunch of us have never really gone for a walk together before. So off we trudged, up the hill and round the housing estate, gawking at houses.

The evening sky was really nice. The way the setting sun lit up the clouds, it seemed as if a huge angel had shed its wings in the sky. The silence permeated the evening, giving us a sense of tranquility, well, at least until the next car arrived. Such awesome company, with the bonus of such awesome scenery. Life couldn't be any better. Well, maybe if it was followed by awesome food, like we the stew we had (haha...damn angkat bakul sendiri), life could be.

However, as the Chinese saying goes, the evening drew to an end. I think it was less than 30mins before the light dimmed and Esme started to feed the mosquitoes. Still, it was a walk to remember, pardon the pun. hehe.

Let's do it again. This time maybe with a beach. (^_^)

What A Way to Turn 20

How nice... I'll be having not one, but 2 exams on my birthday. Yeah.........

Usually people end their semester with an exam and start looking forward to the holidays. I on the other hand, start my semester with an exam.

Not only are the exams on my birthday, they are also on a Saturday, which severely limits my social activities, assuming I had any.

I'd better not fail those two papers or this will go down in history as the worst birthday ever.

On a totally unrelated topic, there have been new additions to the Ministry House Gang. Jonathan from Melaka/Johor, and Melissa from Penang. Jonathan is now staying with us at the Ministry House while Melissa is housemates with Joycie.

Welcome to the Mad House \(^0^)/ Nice to have new faces around! If you think you're relatively sane and normal....well, I thought I was till I met the Ministry House Gang...haha. Watch in amazement as your IQ plummets and your LQ soars!

Lol.

Suprises!

I wrapped up the last of my work at the computer lab and made my way to the lifts. I pushed the down button and waited.

'Ding!'

The elevator's doors slid open and I saw two of my old friends inside.

"SHIMRON!!!!"They yelled. Like I wasn't already losing enough stereocilia.

It's so nice to have friends around in uni, and even better when more of them enroll \(^_^)/

####

On my way out of the computer lab, JH asked me to guard his laptop while he ran downstairs to grab a cup of coffee. I took the liberty to browse around, and I came across the new schedule for next semester.

Wednesday
PSY112 L2
1600-1800

Yay.... (´Д`) Don't we aaall love classes which last till 6pm...

A Psalm for Uncle Larry

1 Bow down Your ear, O LORD, hear me;

For I am poor and needy.
2 Preserve my life, for I am holy;
You are my God;
Save Your servant who trusts in You!
3 Be merciful to me, O Lord,
For I cry to You all day long.
4 Rejoice the soul of Your servant,
For to You, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
5 For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive,
And abundant in mercy to all those who call upon You.
6 Give ear, O LORD, to my prayer;
And attend to the voice of my supplications.
7 In the day of my trouble I will call upon You,
For You will answer me.
8 Among the gods there is none like You, O Lord;
Nor are there any works like Your works.
9 All nations whom You have made
Shall come and worship before You, O Lord,
And shall glorify Your name.
10 For You are great, and do wondrous things;
You alone are God.
11 Teach me Your way, O LORD;
I will walk in Your truth;
Unite my heart to fear Your name.
12 I will praise You, O Lord my God, with all my heart,
And I will glorify Your name forevermore.
13 For great is Your mercy toward me,
And You have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.
14 O God, the proud have risen against me,
And a mob of violent men have sought my life,
And have not set You before them.
15 But You, O Lord, are a God full of compassion, and gracious,
Longsuffering and abundant in mercy and truth.
16 Oh, turn to me, and have mercy on me!
Give Your strength to Your servant,
And save the son of Your maidservant.
17 Show me a sign for good,
That those who hate me may see it and be ashamed,
Because You, LORD, have helped me and comforted me.

Uncle Larry Loh was assulted and is now in critical condition. He and his family needs all the prayers and support they can get.

Soliloquy

Sometimes you reach a point in life where you look back all that has gone before. Your imagination digs deep and draws on the well of memories. It makes you wonder how life would be if you did this the other way, or that some other way. Sometimes it brings a smile to your face, sometimes it makes you regret.

There are many things which I have said and done which I regret. There also things I didn't say or do, which I also regret. Its mostly the things which I should have said back then which make me wonder 'if'.

"I'll listen to you and come back home."
"I'm sorry. That was uncalled for."
"I'll write every week!"
"No, thank you."
"Goodbye, take care."
"Come back safe."
"That was cool, good job!"
"I like your new hairstyle. Looks great on you."
"I'll come back this weekend."
"I'm not busy, go ahead."

And most of all, the words I regret not saying enough to those around me:

"I love you."

I apologise if I should have said something but didn't. I'm not a perfect man.

Happy Birthday 17th Ho Chze Zheng

Kena tapau! Original plan was to doodle on him with marker pen but seems the girls got "a little" carried away.

Akibat all the stuff we poured on him, we couldn't draw anything with the marker pen.

The trifle and cream before we smeared it on each other. The ruckus must have been due to the sherry in it. Yup, definitely the alcohol.

Before he got tapaued...

The organiser of the tapau-ing also gets his share...

Moral of the story: NEVER EVER have anything with cream at your birthday party.

Guns and Guys

3 foam bullet guns and an ample supply of bullets have been lying around the house ever since J's friends left them here. So what do a bunch of guys and an occassional girl do with them? They leave them lying on floor, gathering dust. Just kidding!

We've been scurrying around ducking behind sofas and diving in between chairs to avoid bullets every time there is a gathering. It's so much fun so much so that even E decides to join in despite her being a girl. We all shoot each other like crazy and bruise our knees from crawling on them too much. Still, we can't resist the sweet popping sounds of the pistols and the satisfying 'ouch!' and 'ah!' of victims being hit.

JM dropped by and stayed for dinner tonight. The round started with me giving him a headshot, then JH decided to join in. Next thing you know, E's on her belly crawling around for spare bullets while trying to return fire.

Alas, the fun had to come to an end. Assignment rears her ugly head. Being married to Ann Assignment is NOT fun... I've got twins due on Monday... (T.T)

Contemplation for the Day

He who guards his lips guards his life,
but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin.

Proverbs 13:3 (Click Here)
Many a time I have been guilty of speaking with out thinking. Often, I have said words which sting unintentionally. Those around me bear the brunt of my folly, and watch as I head for ruin.

It pains me to see the damage I have caused as I stop and look back. KC, KM, HR and all the other friends out there who have tasted my acid, I'd like to apologise if I have hurt your feelings. I still do love you guys. I will do my very best from now on the be very careful of what I say, and if I do regress, please be patient with me.

On a lighter note, the HELP Sports Carnival is commencing this Saturday. JM, MJ, AT, and JC will be out there doing their best for our dept. Who's up for a trip to UM to cheer for them?

Baking With Datin Ingrid

I joined my mom and one of her colleague today for a baking class at Datin Ingrid's place, who so happens to be  my mom's  employer's wife.

We started at around 1030 with a rye levain dough which she had already prepared for us in advance. Those we moulded, scored and chucked in the oven. Since rye is naturally low in gluten, it has to be added to normal wheat flour. Liquid levain, on the other hand, being extremely difficult to make, was substituted for solid levain which could be purchased...in Switzerland. Hehe. What's levain, you say? Levain's...fermented dough which is used in place of yeast, kind of like the seed to make the dough rise.

We then moved on to learning how to prepare a wholemeal dough. While letting that sit for an hour or so, Datin Ingrid proceeded on to demonstrate how to make one of her favourite breads: Zopft. This braided bread is really soft and sweet, making a really good snack with marmalade or jam. We also tried our hands at white bread which we topped with rock salt, cumin, poppy seeds, or sesame. These little baguettes make really good aperitifs at parties since they can be made real small.

Once the Zopft were ready, we uncovered the wholemeal dough and halved it. After shaping it into loaves, we scored it and left it to sit for a while longer before baking it in the oven. While waiting for the wholemeal loaves to be done, Datin treated us to her homemade mango sorbet in her backyard. Once the loaves were ready, she brushed them with water to give the crust a nice silvery sheen.

Here are some pictures of what we made today. Not bad, huh?

Glorifying God in Our Relationships

This was the theme for this revamped YAF retreat, 2009. Over the weekend, we explored the biblical take on pursuing a relationship with a member of the opposite sex with the guidance of Pastor Kek.

We stayed over starting Friday evening at Shirley's new mansion. After breaking Shirley's heart by playing Jenga on her new glass table for the whole day, we had a short bible study with Pastor Ho.

Saturday morning was our first talk, held at Serdang Grace Baptist Church, entitled From Friendship to Relationship. In this talk, we first defined what friendship is. For Christians, we share a bond different than those who do not know the Lord. We share Christ. A Christian friendship can then be summarised as the recognition of our unity in Christ through faith, and the expression of that unity in loving, kind, holy, and God-pleasing treatment of one another. Therefore, through Him, we are covenanted to live together, serving one another and interacting as brothers and sisters in Christ. It is according to this
working definition of Christian friendship that a dating relationship should ideally begin.

We also cemented the fact that the only appropriate purpose for a pre-marital romantic relationship is one in which both people are willing, able and interested in being married. Recreational dating is a big no no! Using that as our foundation, we moved on to exploring the characteristics of the ideal spouse is, based on scripture. For consultation purposes, men were pointed to Proverbs 31 (click here for reference) and 1 Peter 3 (click here), while the women were referred to 1 Timothy 3 (click here), Titus 1 (click here) and 1 Peter 3 (click here).

The reasons behind why men should generally and usually initiate a relationship were also delved into.

Lastly, the topic of accountability and the importance of it in a relationship was also brought up and discussed.

The dinner menu for that night was:

Broccoli and Carrot Salad

Chicken Thigh Pepperonata

Fusilli with Cherry Tomatoes

Auntie Linda's Pudding with Vanilla Ice cream
All courtesy of the YAF youth and Shirley.

The 2nd talk was held at Puchong Grace Baptist Church on Sunday and was entitled From Relationship to Courtship. Here, we examined more closely the initiation of any dating or courting relationship. The characteristics of a God-fearing spouse and the dilemma faced by Christians searching for partners todaywere discussed. A study conducted among seniors at a prominent university in USA on what is looked for in a spouse yielded the following results (in order of descending importance and frequency):

1. Good Personality
2. Physically Attractive
3. Good Sense of Humour
4. Fun Loving
5. Intelligent
6. Nice
7. Good Character
8. Wealthy

Unfortunately, when the same survey was conducted at a Christian university and at some large church singles minitries, the top 4 answers were identical! The need for the potential mate to be Christian slid in at number 5. How is the Church any different from the World today?! We were then reminded that we should be searching for someone that we will be serving God with and living the Christian life with until Christ returns or till one of us dies. In general, both sexes are exhorted to consider potential spouses in the light of Ephesians 5:22-33.

During this talk, the young men were reminded to be straightforward when letting a girl know his intentions, while the women were encouraged to to respond to the man who shows initiation by either letting know if he is wasting his time (in a clear manner), or feel free to appropriately encourage him if he is not. (^_^)

In closing, Pastor Kek gave us this quote to mull over:
Run as hard and as fast as you can towards Jesus. Look to your left. Look to your right. Marry someone who is running beside you (Nelson).

End of Semester 1 Celebration

So due to the aforementioned reason (if you can understand Japanese), there was an abrupt change in dinner plans. Still being in the mood to celebrate the end of my 1st semester, all four of us went to Mid Valley's Italiannies to celebrate (and also pay off my outstanding debts for grocery shopping).

Shrimp Aglio Olio

A surprsingly large dish since it came after the spaghetti, which was smaller. The shrimps were really well prepared, being firm and sweet, not overcooked. Unfortunately the tang of the tomatoes and olives in combination quite overpowered the sweetness of the shrimps.

Beef Lasagne
This is one of the best lasagne I have ever tasted. The richness of the red sauce and cheese paired very well with the pastry, toning down the usually overpowering taste.

Spaghetti and Meatballs
Those were the biggest balls I have ever seen! (risque pun intended) I really like the way the chef managed to retain the form of the tomato chunks, giving this everyday dish an interesting twist.

Jared's Sunrise Tequila

Jun Hao tasting Jared's tequila

Mark and his Cosmopolitan

Jared trying Mark's Cosmopolitan

Jun Hao with Mark's Cosmopolitan

I was a good boy and stayed off the C2H5OH since someone had to get us all back in one piece. Watching Jared and Mark high is seriously very entertaining. Mark went lala and walked mindlessly around. We drove off without him and parked in a corner just to watch him wander around the carpark. Jared went into power saver mode and was quiet all the way home.

Those two are out like lights, and considering the fact that Mark has an exam tomorrow... hahaha. I did tell him to stay off the "special drinks" after all (^_^).

Paddington's!

So we were hungry and too lazy to cook. Eating out is such a hassle since all the good shops around our area always are closed on Sunday evenings. Instead of sitting around to decide where to eat before leaving, I suggested we drive out, then decide.

After a few phone calls to my local KL friends, we headed to Paddington's at the Curve. Nice one, Bel! The plate for 10 was very tempting, but since Mark and Jun Hao weren't up to it, we each ordered a dish each.

Mark: The Treasure Box

Jun Hao: The something something with mixed fruits.

There isn't any photo of mine 'cos I had ..erm... consumed it with extreme ettiquete by the time we remembered to take pictures.
