An Uncommon Event

I overslept this morning. Completely missed all my alarms. My consciousness was stirred by my housemate unlocking the front door; it always makes such a cacophony.

Still in the hazy dwam of being shocked awake, I fumbled around making sure I had everything I needed for work. Fresh socks, check. Fresh uniform, check. Lunch, check. Whoaaa!!! Almost forgot to comb my mess of  hair. Right, now off to work. Drat, where are my keys?

In the car I was thinking about how nicely cool my air conditioning was after I had spent that heart wrenching sum for repairs. Then as I drew up to the toll booth, I reached into my pocket for my wallet, and instead pulled out a roll of socks. A second check revealed no wallet.

The toll booth was inevitable. There was no way to turn back, and I had no spare change left in the car. The anticipation of driving up to the booth was like standing in line at the supermarket with a giant trolley of groceries, and your mother leaves you behind in the  line to get something she forgot, and the the person in front of you is almost done.

As my turn came, I wound down my window (newly repaired too) and gave the most charming smile I could muster, then explained my predicament. Turns out, they actually do have SOP for situations like this!

The kind lady walked out of the booth, and wrote me this slip, to be paid the next time I pass through.

I guess you learn something new everyday...

Projects Left Shelved and Hanging

Well, some of you know that I've moved into a new place. It's been a week shy of two months, and I'm quite happy with how I'm turning this place into something which resembles a home.

When I first moved in, the house was very very empty, and I had plenty of things all over the floor. My kitchen utensils were on the floor, my computer was and still is on the floor, my tool kit (which I took over from my dad) was on the floor. I needed to put my things somewhere, and there were insufficient tabletops and counter tops.

I've always believed that the kitchen is the heart of a home, so the first thing which needed to be sorted out was organising my kitchen. The workspace was already too small, so shelves were definitely out of the question. A quick call back home to my ever capable mother got me loaded with high quality wooden pallets and planks, kickstarting my adventure into carpentry. The first project was to build a wall hanger - a linseed finish plank bolted to the wall with some nails hammered in to hang my growing collection of kitchen utensils. What you see in the picture is about a third of what I have. hehe.

There's this place near my old house called Publika, where they throw out a lot of their unwanted wooden pallets. I made a quick trip there and came home with not only another wooden pallet (purpose pending), and a nice big, solid piece of plywood. Gave that board's surface a quick polish, and sanded down the sides (they were really sharp), then covered it with a layer of beeswax-mineral oil mix. VoilĂ , new table top.

Lately, I've also got this baking itch. Not much I could do with my oven sitting precariously on my fridge with my electric kettle perching on my oven. I needed more place to put my things in the dining area. Several wall braces and trips to the hardware shop, I am the proud craftsman of a new kitchen shelf... which kind of totters and creaks awkwardly when you put things on it, but it seems fine so far. I just hope it doesn't crash... my oven is too precious for that.

Adventure Time!

No, this post has nothing to do with Finn and Jake, besides the fact that their picture is gloriously posted below.

This post however, has more to do with my past weekend, amidst the heavy rain and glum. The adventure began on Saturday morning, where for my work training, I was sent, together with my colleague, to an indoor rock climbing centre in Wangsa Maju called Mad Monkeyz. It's a pretty small shop lot, but packed to the brim with walls you can climb on. After six hours there, I am now a certified Level One Sport Climber, and am allowed to belay for top-rope climbers.

The walls there are only about 4m high, but don't let it's short stature fool you into thinking that it is easy! Compensating for what they lack in height, they excel in challenge, both mentally and physically. There are many excruciating paths you can choose to traverse across the walls, and even ceilings! Definitely a fun place to visit if you're looking for both a mental and physical challenge.

Scaling walls is a hungry business, and so for dinner, I was at the Overseas Restaurant to celebrate the 50th birthday anniversary* of a dear family friend. 50 years and she doesn't look much different from when I first met her about 20 years ago. One thing I really admired was that at the dinner, her father made good use of the opportunity to share the gospel with the guests. Very, very brave of him!

At the dinner, I met up with the birthday girl's sister and brother, who are my old fishing 'kakis'. It goes without saying that somebody casually mentioned the word 'fish', and we ended up going for a all-night fishing expedition to this Natural Exotic Fish Fishing Pond in Rawang. For RM100, you can fish for three hours, or you could pay RM100 for two hours and try reel in a jackpot catch. They said that there were giant fish to be caught, and they were absolutely serious about it. Here's me with my 8kg catch - the biggest I have ever gotten. Ever. Amongst the four of us, we managed to reel in another three more giant Redtail Catfish (Hemibagrus wyckioides) by 5am. Unable to stay awake any longer, we left quite reluctantly. So there ended my adventure.

*I say birthday anniversary because you technically have only one birthday. No prizes for guessing when that was. The ones you celebrate every year, would then naturally be your birthday anniversaries.
**Farshid, if you're reading this, no worries. The fish were not killed, but allowed to recuperate, then were subsequently returned into the pond.

Events Love to Stockpile

The past few months have been fairly uneventful. I'm just two weeks into my new term, and also being back in KL. In the past few days, I'm starting to believe that there is a event per time frame quota which states that within an unspecified time frame, if there are no unusual events that happen, they will happen all in one shot. Just like buses - you wait for ever, then four come all at once.

On Tuesday (11th), I signed my tenancy agreements, took them to my uncle for his signature, dropped it off at Plaza Damansara, then intended to head off to a second hand goods exchange store near St Ignatius' Church. I was heading towards the toll in front of Eastin Hotel when my car started rumbling and shaking. As the rumbling got progressively worse, I decided to head back home to get the car checked. The vibration got so bad, it came to a point where I had to stop along the SPRINT highway. After giving my dad a call, I started up the engine, hit the accelerator, only to find that my car wasn't moving. Good thing I kept my mechanic's number and managed to get a tow truck.

Admittedly, this is my first time having my car towed. I must say, it feels like some IMAX theme park ride. The moment the tow truck arrived, it began to pour, but let up just so I could walk home before raining again. Turns out, a shaft broke - connecting part snapped right off, which explains the pinging noise I heard.

Stacking up against my schedule would also be the completion of my new place. The landlady had given the place a good coat of paint and fixed the roof. I have been running around all week buying the basic necessities for the house. As of now, the place is pretty empty, and could do with a washing machine and some kitchen cabinets or shelves. The stench of paint still lingers, but I presume that will go in a few days.

I've also managed to put to use some flippant door signs I bought a while back. I hope MPPJ doesn't take these things too seriously and start coming after us for rearing dinosaurs without a license.

I moved out of my old place with much reluctance on Friday night, after having such nice and loving god-grandparents for so long. However, Saturday morning was the wedding of my god-grandparents' grandnephew. The bride was from France, and so she used my god-grandparents' place as her den while she waited for the groom to redeem her. With at least 50 people swarming at the porch, it was utterly hot and sweaty, but the atmosphere remained festive regardless. This also meant that the weekend would be packed full of wedding events.

That very night itself, I attended the wedding banquet, and then the church wedding the following afternoon. Having already to assist in Kid's Church on Sunday morning and song lead later in the evening, I was definitely sputtered out. The Thai Buddhist ceremony on Monday, and three nights of feasting had to be turned down.

Monday's schedule was not any easier. I had arranged for a hiking trip to Gunung Datuk, since it was a public holiday. Aiming to be back in KL by 1300hrs, I agreed to a Kid's Church meeting at 1500hrs as well. I'll put up a separate post about my hiking trip. Hopefully this week doesn't get any more hectic than it already has been - I need my breather.
