Ini Kalilah, or maybe not: a Christian reflection

I think at this crucial point in time, when many of us a devastated, and even angry at the alleged tricks pulled by the ruling party, where we feel that our hope for a better Malaysia is gone, that there is no longer the notion of justice in Malaysia, that we remember a few things:

1. Politics will never save Malaysia. Politics are done by politicians who are sinners just like you and me.
2. There will never be true justice here and now, because justice is meted out by sinners like you and me.
3. We find our true King, our true Politician in Jesus, who truly mendahulukan His rakyat by literally laying his life down for them. He is the one who has truly menepati-ed all His janji, case in point the whole Old Testament, and he is the only one who can make us ubah, for true change can only come by the Spirit and from the heart.
4. God has not abandoned us. Remember Romans 13, that all authorities in power are instituted by God. He allows governments to rule, good or bad, all for the good of his people, so that they may be come more like his Son, King Jesus.
5. God may or may not 'heal this land' next GE or any time on this side of heaven. What he does promise us instead, is a kingdom where Jesus reigns absolute, where there WILL be no injustice.

Therefore, do not be discouraged or sad. Find your comfort in knowing that your Father, who is able to raise the dead to life, is still in control of all that is happening, and that He has set aside for you something far greater than a clean and just Malaysia - a New Heaven and New Earth where Justice dwells.

[Edit 6/08/2013: I suppose it would only be fair to credit this post to Pastor Kenneth Lo from St Mary's Cathedral, since it was his sermon, which can be heard here that inspired this post.]

A Christian's Thoughts on Bersih 3.0

I have to admit: all this excitement about Bersih, about making a change, about politics, about the future... It makes me forgetful and confused as a Christian.

Social Activism and the Gospel
As Christians, should we be concerned about clean and fair elections, about who runs our country? Yes, we should. Our God is a God of justice (which we oft forget/ignore in favour of His softer side), and it should be at the core of our being too. Recently, I have been reading Isaiah, and God's justice is a big theme of that book. Take for example Isaiah 9:8-10:4, which was where I last stopped. Isaiah is seen here prophesying against the nation of Israel for turning away from God and revelled in injustice. For such insurgence, God uses Assyria to pull down Israel, punishing them for not loving him they way they should have as God's people, and for consequently not loving each other as God's people. So should we be concerned about social justice or the gross lack of it? Most definitely.

Here's the part which I always mix up. As much as social justice should be at the core of our being, as a Christian who gets angry when politicians are bullying the people who voted them into place, I forget that social justice is not the core of my being. Using the Isaiah passage to illuminate my point - God was first and foremost angry at Israel, not for mistreating their fellow Israelites, but for turning away from him, the God who had called them his own. Fast forwarding to the New Testament, Jesus answers Pilate, 'my kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.' (John 18:36).

Following the Bible's bigger picture, you can easily see the pattern of a Kingdom of sorts, eventually culminating in the Kingdom of the New Creation. From the garden of Eden, to Abraham, to David and Solomon, and finally to Jesus, we see the idea of God's people in God's place under God's rule and blessing. The antithesis to that would be the Fall, and the Exile (for further reading, read Gospel and Kingdom by Graeme Goldsworthy). My point is that as Christians, our ultimate concern should be the gospel of Jesus Christ (Mark 1:15), and not so much social activism, because though concerns for social justice flows out of the implications of the Gospel, it is not the Gospel. The line is narrow here, and it is all too easy to preach social activism instead of the Gospel. I have to admit, I often find myself doing exactly just that. Time and again, I have to remind myself that it was Jesus who died and rose again for my sins, and it is He who will speak for me at the Day of Judgement, not clean elections or upright politicians.

Politicians and the Gospel
I was there in the midst of the Bersih crowd. I was there when the plumes of tear gas crept amongst us. I am sure many of you were. I am also sure, just like I am, you are angry at the politicians from the ruling party who are somehow responsible in part for our suffering. We are mad, and rightly so, at their blatant acts of corruption, abuse of authority, and subversive tactics. Yet, as angry as we are, we need to stop and remember this:

There were some present at that very time who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. And he answered them, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered in this way? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish."-Luke 13:1-5
Do you really think these politicians are worse sinners than we are? To quote my friend Aarony, " It's too easy to paint them as enemies unworthy of the gospel and grace of Jesus". Think back to the times when we had spurned God's grace, even while professing love for him. I know I am guilty of such hypocrisy. As much as I needed God to show his mercy and grace to me, so do these politicians need God's forgiveness. As hard as it is to even think anything nice about them, we as people who have experienced first hand God's love and forgiveness need to pray for these politicians. In fact, Paul tells us how we can be praying for them in 1 Timothy 2:1-3, urging that we should make supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving to be made for all people, for kings and those in high positions. Paul even goes on to say that it is a good thing to do, for it pleases God!

The Holy Spirit's Role in all This
I have to confess that as hard as I try to remind myself to work against my natural tendency to lash out at politicians or to preach a social gospel, I find myself doing the very things I tell myself not to. This only serves to provide evidence of my helpless state. Yet it is good to remember that we are not alone in this process of becoming more Christlike, for scripture reminds us that indeed, it is with the empowerment of the Holy Spirit that we are able to be molded into sanctity. Paul in Romans 15:15-16 reminds the Roman Christians of that work of the Holy Spirit in their lives, and we can be confident of such a work in our own as well.

Rantings in APA Format.

It seems Malaysia and the antics our government has been up to have caught the attention of Forbes, an American publishing and media company, whose flagship magazine is published fortnightly (Wikipedia, 2009).

The author minces no words in pointing out the condition in Malaysia. The Myth of A Moderate Malaysia: Canings, Cows' Heads and Ethnoreligious Apartheid really hits home (Dhume, 2009). If I'm not mistaken, a while back, Hishammuddin told the public not to compare Malaysia's Bumiputera policy to the apartheid, stating that he would take stern action if it were mentioned again (The Malaysian Insider, 2009). I'd like to see him try go after Forbes.

I've also read a comment on the internet by one Diana arguing that Malay supremacy does not equate to apartheid (Turkish Gambit, 2009). It, on the other hand, is a delicate issue and should not be compared to other ethnocentric discrimination (Turkish Gambit, 2009). Delicate issue? Every time an issue concerning the Special Rights of the Malays as provided in the Federal Constitution, Articles 3, 4, 152, and 153 is raised, I hear the same old answer: This is a sensitive issue. End of discussion. The American Constitution has 27 amendments to it (Mount, 2009); Isn't it about time we actually sat down like men to discuss the relevance of the aforementioned articles in today's Malaysian society without hiding behind the phrase 'sensitive issue'? Then again, I suppose I shouldn't use the phrase 'like men'. We're not very well known for being sensible and genteel.

This cancer is spreading fast and will kill the body unless it is cut out (Wee, 2009). If the current situation is going to go out of hand, only God can stop me from leaving the country like the countless ex-Malaysians before me.

Melayu Dikhianati?

http://utusan.com.my/utusan/info.asp?y=2009&dt=0531&pub=utusan_malaysia&sec=Rencana&pg=re_05.htm&arc=hive

I shall remain silent on my personal opinions of this article for decency's sake. However, I would implore you to read this article and ponder.

Just in case you get disheartened and disgusted but what you have read, here's something to cheer you up:

The LORD is my light and my salvation—

       whom shall I fear?
       The LORD is the stronghold of my life—
       of whom shall I be afraid?
 2 When evil men advance against me
       to devour my flesh,
       when my enemies and my foes attack me,
       they will stumble and fall.
 3 Though an army besiege me,
       my heart will not fear;
       though war break out against me,
       even then will I be confident.
 4 One thing I ask of the LORD,
       this is what I seek:
       that I may dwell in the house of the LORD
       all the days of my life,
       to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD
       and to seek him in his temple.
 5 For in the day of trouble
       he will keep me safe in his dwelling;
       he will hide me in the shelter of his tabernacle
       and set me high upon a rock.
 6 Then my head will be exalted
       above the enemies who surround me;
       at his tabernacle will I sacrifice with shouts of joy;
       I will sing and make music to the LORD.
 7 Hear my voice when I call, O LORD;
       be merciful to me and answer me.
 8 My heart says of you, "Seek his face!"
       Your face, LORD, I will seek.
 9 Do not hide your face from me,
       do not turn your servant away in anger;
       you have been my helper.
       Do not reject me or forsake me,
       O God my Savior.
 10 Though my father and mother forsake me,
       the LORD will receive me.
 11 Teach me your way, O LORD;
       lead me in a straight path
       because of my oppressors.
 12 Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes,
       for false witnesses rise up against me,
       breathing out violence.
 13 I am still confident of this:
       I will see the goodness of the LORD
       in the land of the living.
 14 Wait for the LORD;
       be strong and take heart
       and wait for the LORD.
-Psalms 27-

Psalm 94

While having my quiet time, I found this Psalm echo my very feelings on recent ... ahem... matters:

 1 O LORD, the God who avenges,
       O God who avenges, shine forth.
 2 Rise up, O Judge of the earth;
       pay back to the proud what they deserve.
 3 How long will the wicked, O LORD,
       how long will the wicked be jubilant?
 4 They pour out arrogant words;
       all the evildoers are full of boasting.
 5 They crush your people, O LORD;
       they oppress your inheritance.
 6 They slay the widow and the alien;
       they murder the fatherless.
 7 They say, "The LORD does not see;
       the God of Jacob pays no heed."
 8 Take heed, you senseless ones among the people;
       you fools, when will you become wise?
 9 Does he who implanted the ear not hear?
       Does he who formed the eye not see?
 10 Does he who disciplines nations not punish?
       Does he who teaches man lack knowledge?
 11 The LORD knows the thoughts of man;
       he knows that they are futile.
 12 Blessed is the man you discipline, O LORD,
       the man you teach from your law;
 13 you grant him relief from days of trouble,
       till a pit is dug for the wicked.
 14 For the LORD will not reject his people;
       he will never forsake his inheritance.
 15 Judgment will again be founded on righteousness,
       and all the upright in heart will follow it.
 16 Who will rise up for me against the wicked?
       Who will take a stand for me against evildoers?
 17 Unless the LORD had given me help,
       I would soon have dwelt in the silence of death.
 18 When I said, "My foot is slipping,"
       your love, O LORD, supported me.
 19 When anxiety was great within me,
       your consolation brought joy to my soul.
 20 Can a corrupt throne be allied with you—
       one that brings on misery by its decrees?
 21 They band together against the righteous
       and condemn the innocent to death.
 22 But the LORD has become my fortress,
       and my God the rock in whom I take refuge.
 23 He will repay them for their sins
       and destroy them for their wickedness;
       the LORD our God will destroy them.

The Wise Man Built His House On The Rock…

But the rock shifted due to overdevelopment of the hillside.

Not so wise after all.

The things people do to earn money.

The Chinese put melamine in their milk, we point fingers and ask why didn’t they have stricter rules, or don’t they have a sense of principle. At least with melamine, you don’t lose the roof over your head and have your belongings looted; you just suffer from a stone (easily removed) or you go to a better place (or not).

Well, with house prices hitting the millions, its no surprise the people in the construction business want to get rich too. People want houses with views, we’ll give them houses with views and conveniently forget to tell them that the ground isn’t stable. No one would be any wiser. Officials are easily bribed anyway…

I want to be a contractor to! Off to get my hair permed, and to buy a pair of bright yellow boots…
